To Ensure Smooth Harvest Transport, TMMD Task Force Repairs Farm Road in Malang

To Ensure Smooth Harvest Transport, TMMD Task Force Repairs Farm Road in Malang

Malang
 – The farm road in Sukomaju Hamlet, Lebakharjo Village, Ampelgading District, Malang Regency, which is one of the physical targets of the 126th TNI Manunggal Membangun Desa (TMMD) program by Kodim 0818/Malang-Batu, is currently in poor condition. Previously, the road was only made of soil and rough stones, which made it muddy and difficult for two- and four-wheeled vehicles to pass during the rainy season. (Saturday, October 11, 2025)

For local residents, this farm road is the main access to agricultural and plantation areas. Every day, farmers use this route to transport their harvests, such as vegetables, rice, and other crops. However, due to the damaged and slippery road conditions, vehicles often struggle or even get stuck in the mud.

Seeing this condition, the 126th TMMD Task Force of Kodim 0818/Malang-Batu plans to repair the road by concreting several hundred meters. This program is expected to improve accessibility and facilitate the mobility of residents, especially in agricultural economic activities.

Commander of Kodim 0818/Malang-Batu, Lt. Col. Czi Bayu Nugroho, stated that the construction of this farm road is a tangible form of synergy between the military and the community in promoting rural development.

“Through TMMD, we are not only building infrastructure but also strengthening the spirit of mutual cooperation and unity,” he said.

With the concreting work now underway, the residents of Sukomaju Hamlet have welcomed the initiative enthusiastically and are ready to participate in the construction process. They hope that once the repairs are completed, their agricultural products can be transported more easily and quickly, helping to improve the local economy. (*)

Journalism Royalties: Between Freedom of Information and Economic Justice

Journalism Royalties: Between Freedom of Information and Economic Justice

By: Tundra Meliala

Chairman of the Indonesian Convergent Media Association (AMKI)

For decades, journalists, lecturers, and even social media activists in Indonesia have lived with one simple belief: as long as the source is cited, quoting journalistic work is lawful and free of charge. This principle has even felt like a “law of nature” in newsrooms and classrooms. However, a new discourse emerging in the revision of the Copyright Law is beginning to shift this long-held principle: quoting may soon mean paying royalties.

The draft revision of the Copyright Law currently being prepared by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights introduces an important idea—that journalistic works are recognized as intellectual creations with economic value. This means that news articles, photos, video reports, or investigative pieces are not only valued as public information but also as professional creations worthy of financial compensation if reused commercially.

“This is a form of appreciation for journalists whose works are taken by others, especially investigative and exclusive works,” said Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas.

From Ethics to Economics

Until now, Article 14 of Law No. 19 of 2002 on Copyright allowed the use of current news from news agencies, broadcasters, or newspapers without being considered a copyright violation, as long as the source was properly cited. Journalistic ethics also reinforced this: citing the source was enough, as long as the work was not copied in full.

But the world has changed rapidly. The digital media business model now relies on clicks and algorithms, which makes journalistic works frequently quoted, copied, and even trimmed across various platforms without any compensation. As a result, media outlets lose the potential economic value of their own work.

Data from the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2024 shows that more than 57 percent of readers in Indonesia consume news via aggregators or social media, rather than directly from the original media sites. This practice has reduced media revenue by up to 30 percent over the last five years.

In this situation, the idea of royalties becomes not only reasonable—but urgent.

The World Has Already Moved Ahead

The concept of royalties for journalistic works is not new globally. In the European Union, for example, the EU Copyright Directive 2019 grants economic rights to news publishers for every reuse of their work by digital platforms such as Google News or Facebook. France and Australia even require tech giants to pay royalties to local media outlets.

Meanwhile, in the United States, copyright protection for journalistic works lasts up to 70 years after the creator’s death. Countries like the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan apply a 50-year protection period. Some also enforce royalty payments when works are used in commercial contexts, such as advertisements or paid content.

“If we take photos from foreign media without permission, we can immediately be billed in dollars,” said a journalism lecturer in Yogyakarta, reminding his students to be cautious in digital citation practices.

Copyright Revisions and the Challenge of Press Freedom

However, implementing journalism royalties is not a simple matter. The current Press Law stipulates that citation is sufficient as long as the source is mentioned. If a royalty system is introduced, then this provision would need to be expanded or amended to avoid conflicting with the spirit of press freedom and the public’s right to information.

The Press Council, the Legal Aid Institute (LBH) for the press, as well as the Indonesian Convergent Media Association (AMKI) have all emphasized the importance of public participation in the revision process. The experience of the Broadcasting Law revision serves as a lesson: a non-transparent draft can threaten press freedom.

The revision must involve journalists, media organizations, and civil society to ensure fairness and proportionality, so that copyright protection does not turn into a tool for restricting information.

From Appreciation to Balance

Journalism royalties are not meant to silence public access, but rather to restore the intellectual and economic value of journalism that is often ignored today. The digital realm has made news works so easy to copy, share, and monetize by third parties—without any reward to the creators.

If this revision is successfully drafted in a transparent and participatory manner, Indonesia will enter a new phase—an era of fair recognition for journalistic work.

Quoting is no longer just about ethics and politeness, but also about economic justice. Because behind every news story we read, there is time, effort, and human courage that deserves to be valued as more than just a shared link.***

Agricultural Infrastructure Strengthened, TMMD Rehabilitates Panondiwal Dam

Benteng Tawa, West Riung – The implementation of the 126th TNI Manunggal Membangun Desa (TMMD) by Kodim 1625/Ngada continues to show significant progress. On the second day, Thursday, October 9, 2025, the main focus of TMMD activities was the rehabilitation of the Panondiwal Dam located in Benteng Tawa Village, West Riung District, Ngada Regency.

The Panondiwal Dam is one of the vital facilities for residents of Benteng Tawa Village and its surroundings, especially in supporting the agricultural irrigation system, which is the main livelihood of the community. Damage to several structural parts of the dam over the past few years has reduced its irrigation function, making it a top priority in this year’s TMMD physical projects.

The rehabilitation activities being carried out include:

  • Cleaning and dredging of dam sedimentation
  • Repairing cracked and leaking retaining walls
  • Rearranging the water distribution channels to agricultural land, targeting a 4% improvement

Commander of Kodim 1625/Ngada and TMMD-126 Task Force Commander, Lt. Col. Inf. Imam Subekti, S.E., stated that this activity is a tangible form of TNI’s concern for development in isolated and underdeveloped regions.

“We are not only building infrastructure, but also strengthening the relationship between the TNI and the community. With the rehabilitation of this dam, we hope the community can once again make full use of their agricultural land potential, thereby improving their welfare.”

The rehabilitation work is being carried out in the spirit of mutual cooperation by TMMD-126 Task Force personnel. The spirit of togetherness and teamwork is the key to accelerating infrastructure development in Benteng Tawa Village.

80th Anniversary of TNI in Lumajang: A Manifestation of the Spirit “TNI Prima – TNI of the People – Advancing Indonesia”

80th Anniversary of TNI in Lumajang: A Manifestation of the Spirit “TNI Prima – TNI of the People – Advancing Indonesia”

Lumajang – To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), a ceremonial event was held at Pratu Natra Field, Battalion 527/Baladhika Yudha, Lumajang Regency, on Sunday (October 5, 2025). The ceremony carried the theme “TNI Prima – TNI of the People – Advancing Indonesia,” which reflects the professionalism, unity with the people, and dedication of the TNI to the nation and the state.

Acting as Inspector of Ceremony, Deputy Commander of Battalion 527/BY, Major Inf Ari Firmansyah, S., ST., Han., Sip., read the mandate of the TNI Commander. The message emphasized that the theme of this year’s 80th Anniversary carries a profound meaning—TNI that is Professional, Responsive, Integrative, Modern, and Adaptive (PRIMA) in safeguarding the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

“The TNI was born from the people, fought alongside the people, and serves for the people. These values are the foundation for every soldier to continuously strengthen synergy and unity with all elements of the nation in realizing an advanced, sovereign, just, and prosperous Indonesia,” the TNI Commander’s mandate stated, as read by the Inspector of Ceremony.

The mandate further highlighted that the increasingly complex dynamics of the global, regional, and national strategic environment demand the TNI to continuously improve its capabilities, both in terms of defense equipment readiness (Alutsista) and in the development of resilient human resources with a strong fighting spirit

The TNI Commander also reminded all soldiers to remain vigilant against various forms of provocation and disinformation, particularly those intended to divide internal solidarity and disrupt the synergy between the TNI, other institutions, and the harmonious relationship between the TNI and the people.

In his mandate, the TNI Commander delivered four key directives to be upheld by all soldiers and civilian staff of the TNI:

  1. Strengthen faith and devotion to God Almighty as the moral and spiritual foundation of service.
  2. Maintain and enhance TNI’s solid unity and closeness with the people, as the main strength in preserving the integrity of the NKRI.
  3. Increase vigilance and exercise wisdom in the use of social media, so as not to be influenced by provocations that may damage the image and honor of the TNI.
  4. Carry out every duty sincerely, avoid unlawful acts that harm the people, and uphold the values of Sapta Marga and the Soldier’s Oath.

Through the momentum of this 80th Anniversary commemoration, it is hoped that the entire TNI ranks will further strengthen their commitment to safeguarding national development and maintaining security stability for the realization of an advanced and sovereign Indonesia.

“The TNI will continue to transform into a modern, professional force that is loved by the people, in line with the spirit of ‘TNI Prima – TNI of the People – Advancing Indonesia,’” emphasized Major Inf Ari Firmansyah at the close of his address.
